The technique of raising and directing energy is an essential tool of magic. Although there are many ways to raise energy, this is in reference to the cone of power used in the Reclaiming tradition of witchcraft.
Reclaiming is an ecstatic tradition and energy is ecstasy. In her book, The Spiral Dance, Starhawk says,”the primary principle of magic is connection. The universe is a fluid, ever changing energy pattern. What affects one thing, affects all things. All is interwoven into the continuous fabric of being. It's warp and weft are energy, which is the essence of magic.”
We raise energy in a ritual to create powerful magic. When we join together with a common intention, and engage our will, drawing on the existing patterns of energy, we can manifest our intention; our ultimate goal we wish to achieve by raising energy.
At a specific point during a ritual, we will raise a cone of power (although it can happen spontaneously as well). We begin by being in the moment. 100% present, engaged and focused on the intention. Through chanting, drumming and movement, (swaying, circling, dancing, spiral dance) we begin to raise energy. In ritual, energy work is not a performance piece, so everyone needs to be involved. The chanting, drumming and movement may intensify as the energy builds And many may feel the energy gathering as the group sings and moves. The energy flows in spirals and in a circular wavelike motion. By visualizing it flowing deosil (clockwise) around the circle and rising up in a cone shape, we are moving the energy through us and above us. Often, a priestess who senses the energy can move around the edges, shoring up the circle and smoothing it out.
The energy will eventually form a natural peak and the song will become a wordless chant, just tones and sounds and the voices will grow stronger, building and building, coming together as one tone. At this point, we hold the intention of the magic, and we are able to direct the energy towards the intention (or objects to be charged) and release the cone of energy with a breath. There is a sense of stillness as the energy is sent skyward.
After the energy is released, take time to let its afterglow flow into and around you. Drink in what you need, grounding the rest back into the earth.
We are beings of energy, capable of making wonderful effective changes through our magic.
